For background, see my earlier Walk and Talk post.
Suppose that a small group of us were to try a 5-day walk and talk, using as a base the town of Rehoboth, Delaware. Our family has vacationed in the area long before President Biden’s residence there made it famous, so I know the general area pretty well.
My thought is not to try to figure out an end-to-end 50 mile (80 kilometer) walk to do over 5 days. Instead, use Rehoboth as a hub, drive short distances to trails, and do either loops or out-and-back walks. That simplifies a lot of the logistics, because there are places to have dinner in Rehoboth.
I think that last week in September would work best, although the first week in October might also work. Weather is generally good. And it is off-season, so that lodging is available, and it is more relaxed than in the summer.
Here is a 5-day itinerary off the top of my head. I’m sure it can be improved upon.
Walk about 4-5 miles along the beach from the north of Dewey Beach toward Indian River. Picnic lunch. Then turn around and return.
Drive to a point where you can pick up the Junction and Breakwater Trail about halfway between Rehoboth and Lewes. Walk toward Lewes. Have lunch there. Then loop back via Cape Henlopen park. (I would have to map this out and perhaps modify it.)
Drive to the Lewes library and walk on the Georgetown-Lewes trail toward Georgetown for about 4-5 miles. Stop for lunch, and then return.
Drive to the town of Bethany. Walk along the back roads between Bethany and Fenwick Island. (I imagine being able to map out a loop of about 9 miles.)
Drive to the north end of Ocean City. Walk along the beach for about 4-5 miles. stop for lunch. Walk another 4 miles. Catch a bus or take an Uber back to where you started.
Sounds delightful. Indeed, Bethany Beach and surrounding areas would be very pleasant.
I'm still working full time, so I'm doubtful I could get away for 5 days. A long weekend might be more like it. Depending on scheduling, I could see participating for part of the time, e.g. Fri-Sun, Sat- Mon, or depending on the timing, a 4-day weekend.
Don’t forget to climb the tower from WWII that was staffed to watch for Nazi subs etc.
