“…fool me twice, shame on me"

At this point, anyone who is willing to voluntarily engage with Trump in some financial transaction pretty much deserves his fate. Trump’s reputation for conning and stiffing is well documented from Trump University to his various construction projects. He cares about the little guy only until his wallet gets impacted.

Crypto + Trump = the perfect marriage.

I have fond memories of the crypto ads full of celebrity endorsements in the 2022 Super Bowl. Hopefully, Trump is considering something similar, but full of right wing celebrities for the upcoming NFL season. Hulk Hogan would have been perfect. RIP.

It's remarkable that folks don't see crypto for what it is. My first initial knee jerk reaction was to chuckle at anyone goofy enough to buy in. It's agreeing with a few million folks I don't know to assign value to an abstraction in the ether.

Yes, I understand that vast fortunes are being spun out of the ether, and early holders achieved blah blah blah.... I don't care.

Many of the complaints about Crypto being used for illegal transactions can just as well apply to any other money, including official fiat issuance. Governments since time immemorial have always debased their currencies, originally from clipping a portion of gold or silver from coins, to today's massive issuance of unbacked paper. The great advantage of say Bitcoin is that the total issuance is limited, affording some assurance against debasement. With governments having eliminated scarcity, a key feature of desirable money, it is not surprising that people want to find alternatives.

Yea, the complaint about crypto being used for illegal transactions always struck me as strange, as though it wasn’t common in all manner of transactable things. I agree that if you are using crypto you should expect a higher level of care is needed, but so with cash or check as well.

For another perspective on Crypto being all about illegal activity, here is a podcast with Tyler Cowen and Garett Jones.

Also re: AI being able to recognize AI writing, this is not always true. I have tested this on some of the models at least and had them fail.

I've now read the NYMag article Cowen referenced. What a collection of very bad people, up to and including the writer. "Nature enthusiast"? Someone who "shot a few snakes" on his property for instagram, and once "buried a fish" in his yard thus demonstrating an interest in "regenerative agriculture"? Drugs are cool, though. Good luck turning this into eco-terrorism, NYMag. This is all you, Manhattan. Own it.

“humans train the LLM to offend as few people as possible.“

I have a tendency to say things that surprise and sometimes offend people, so using AI to soften my perspective might help.
